AU Demands Immediate Ceasefire in Sudan Amid Escalating Humanitarian Disaster

African Union Ramps Up Pressure as Sudan Death Toll Tops 28,700

The African Union (AU) issued an urgent plea Sunday for warring factions in Sudan to implement an immediate ceasefire and begin political negotiations. The call comes as the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) enters its 10th month, creating what AU officials describe as \\"the worst humanitarian crisis in Africa.\\"

\\"We condemn all forms of violations, including grave abuses against women and children,\\" said AU Commissioner Bankole Adeoye during the 38th AU Summit in Addis Ababa. The crisis has displaced over 14 million people according to UN estimates, with many facing severe food shortages and medical supply crises.

Suspended State Seeks Path Back to AU Membership

Sudan has remained suspended from the AU since October 2021 following a military coup. While the AU maintains its suspension, Adeoye confirmed the bloc remains actively engaged, stating: \\"Peace requires an inclusive, constitutional transition โ€“ something not currently happening.\\"

The conflict's ripple effects extend beyond humanitarian concerns, threatening Sudan's legacy as a founding member of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). Analysts warn continued fighting could destabilize neighboring countries already struggling with refugee influxes.
