South Korea Seeks to Extend President Yoon’s Detention Amid Investigation

In a significant development, South Korea's prosecution has requested an extension of President Yoon Suk-yeol's detention until February 6 to facilitate further investigations. This move comes after the special investigative headquarters submitted the request to the Seoul Central District Court on Thursday, with a decision anticipated as early as Friday.

President Yoon, who made history as the first sitting president to be arrested in the country, was apprehended in the presidential office on January 15. A prior warrant allowed for his custody for up to 20 days, stemming from his arrest on charges related to insurrection.

The National Assembly had moved to impeach Yoon on December 14 of the previous year, sending the motion to the Constitutional Court for deliberation over 180 days. During this period, Yoon's presidential powers were suspended. Investigative agencies have identified him as a suspected ringleader in insurrection activities, particularly following his declaration of martial law on December 3, which was swiftly revoked by the National Assembly hours later.

The extension of his detention is widely expected to lead to further indictments under charges of insurrection and related offenses, marking a pivotal moment in South Korea's political landscape.
