In a bold move, Han Dong-hoon, the leader of South Korea's ruling People Power Party, has called for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol. Han emphasized that impeachment is the only viable solution to the turmoil sparked by Yoon's recent declaration of martial law.
Following Yoon's controversial televised address justifying the martial law decision, Han addressed reporters, stating that President Yoon has shown no willingness to resign voluntarily. He argued that Yoon should be immediately removed from all state responsibilities, including military command.
Han further asserted that those responsible for the unconstitutional declaration, including President Yoon, must face severe consequences. He urged party lawmakers to vote for impeachment based on their personal convictions and conscience.
\"We must stop further confusion. There is only one effective method now,\" Han declared. \"In the next impeachment motion vote, our party's lawmakers should enter the assembly hall and take part in the vote based on their own conviction and conscience.\"
Initially, the People Power Party had hoped for Yoon's resignation and refrained from supporting impeachment. However, after unsuccessful attempts to persuade the president, the party leadership has shifted its stance. Last week, opposition parties submitted an impeachment motion against Yoon, but it was withdrawn when People Power Party lawmakers boycotted the vote. The opposition plans to reintroduce the impeachment motion later today.
