Singapore’s senior minister and secretary-general of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP), Lee Hsien Loong, has endorsed Prime Minister Lawrence Wong as the party’s next secretary-general. In a statement made during the PAP Conference on Sunday, Lee announced his proposal to elect Wong, who has been serving as deputy secretary-general since 2022, to lead the new central executive committee.
Lee, who will continue his role within the central executive committee in a supporting and advisory capacity, emphasized the importance of leadership continuity and steadfast commitment to the party’s core values of honesty, integrity, and incorruptibility. He expressed confidence in Wong’s ability to guide the PAP in adapting to society’s evolving needs.
Lawrence Wong responded by committing to refreshing the party’s strategies to better serve Singaporeans and maintain the PAP’s longstanding governance since the country’s independence in 1965. He urged party members to dedicate themselves to securing every vote in the upcoming general election, striving to win the mandate to continue governing Singapore.
The PAP, founded in 1954, has been the dominant political force in Singapore for decades. Wong’s leadership is seen as a move to ensure the party remains responsive and resilient in the face of changing societal dynamics.
