In a significant move to bolster international cooperation, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for China and Laos to establish a robust model for Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) collaboration. This call to action was made during his meeting with Thongloun Sisoulith, the president of Laos and general secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee.
President Xi emphasized the importance of continuing the development of the China-Laos Railway and advancing the China-Laos Economic Corridor. These projects are pivotal in enhancing connectivity and promoting economic growth between the two nations.
Earlier in the day, Xi attended the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, where leaders from the BRICS nations discussed various strategies for sustainable development and economic cooperation. Reflecting on the progress made since the significant consensus reached in October 2023, Xi highlighted the active implementation by both countries in areas such as trade, investment, and cultural exchanges.
Describing China and Laos as socialist comrades and brothers, Xi underscored the special significance of their bilateral relations. He assured that China remains a trustworthy friend and partner to Laos, irrespective of shifts in the international landscape. Both nations are dedicated to building a community with a shared future, focusing on high-quality development and mutual revitalization.
President Xi also addressed the importance of strategic mutual trust and practical cooperation. He expressed China’s willingness to import more high-quality agricultural products from Laos and to enhance collaborations in education, culture, and youth initiatives. Additionally, he praised Laos for its active participation in BRICS cooperation and its successful hosting of the East Asian Leaders' meetings on cooperation.
Thongloun Sisoulith responded by highlighting the historic strength of Laos-China relations, noting the expansion of bilateral cooperation across various sectors. He reaffirmed Laos’ unwavering support for China’s core interests and its adherence to the one-China policy. Sisoulith expressed optimism about further advancing joint projects like the Laos-China Railway and Economic Corridor, reinforcing the commitment to building a shared future.
The meeting concluded with mutual agreements to strengthen multilateral coordination and safeguard international fairness and justice, particularly benefiting developing countries. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to deepening the China-Laos community with a shared future, setting the stage for continued prosperity and collaboration.
