The BRICS nations are taking a bold step towards reshaping the global landscape by advocating for significant reforms in international governance. Highlighting their collective strength, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized, \"Whatever resistance there may be, BRICS, a positive and stable force for good, will continue to grow.\"
A recent survey conducted by CGTN in collaboration with Renmin University of China and the New Era Institute of International Communication gathered responses from 1,634 individuals across BRICS countries. The findings reveal a strong belief that BRICS is injecting much-needed momentum into global governance, underscoring the importance of creating a fairer and more reasonable international order.
Development Demands Call for Urgent Governance Reforms
Economic globalization faces numerous challenges today, with rising tensions between multilateralism and unilateralism, as well as fairness versus hegemony. The widening development gap between the Global North and South highlights the deep-rooted issues within the current international order, which is predominantly shaped by a few developed nations. BRICS countries are steadfast in their aspiration to establish a new international framework that promotes equity and reason.
Survey results indicate that 96.2% of respondents believe in the equal participation of countries in international affairs and the collaborative establishment of global systems and orders. Additionally, 72.6% support necessary reforms to the existing international rules, which are largely dominated by developed nations. The UN remains a focal point for BRICS, with 83.9% advocating for the organization to better address the interests and demands of \"Global South\" countries.
When asked about the main aspects of the international order that require urgent reform, BRICS respondents highlighted several key areas:
- 63.6% call for increased transparency in the decision-making processes of international organizations.
- 60.2% demand greater representation and voice for developing countries in global affairs.
- 56.8% emphasize the need to respect the authority of international law.
- 55.9% advocate for strengthening international cooperation and coordination within institutions like the UN Security Council.
Furthermore, nearly half of the respondents oppose the use of military sanctions against other countries (49.6%) and emphasize the importance of narrowing the North-South gap through international aid, knowledge sharing, and technology transfer (48.7%). Additionally, 45.8% urge a reduction in trade barriers and protectionist measures to foster a more inclusive global economy.
As BRICS continues to grow and influence global governance, the push for a fairer and more equitable international order gains momentum, reflecting the collective will of its member nations to drive positive change on the world stage.
