China and UK Strengthen Diplomatic Ties in Beijing Talks

The Chinese mainland's Foreign Minister Wang Yi held pivotal talks with visiting British Foreign Secretary David Lammy in Beijing on Friday. As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and major global economies, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the international order centered on the United Nations.

Wang Yi emphasized that China and the UK should act as guardians of global stability, partnering to address pressing challenges and foster national development. Highlighting the importance of mutual understanding and respect, Wang expressed China's willingness to deepen strategic communication and promote practical cooperation, aiming to elevate China-UK relations to a new stage of stable development.

Reflecting on the historical evolution of bilateral relations, Wang noted that China and the UK are at a new starting point. He welcomed the UK's Labor government's initiative to develop a long-term, stable, and strategically significant relationship with China, viewing it as a positive alignment with the historical and current needs of both nations.

Addressing sensitive issues, Wang stated that Taiwan and Hong Kong matters are internal affairs of China, adhering to the principle of non-interference in international relations. This stance underscores China's commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Wang also announced China's readiness to restore dialogue and cooperation mechanisms across various fields, including trade, finance, green development, science and technology, health, education, and cultural exchanges. This comprehensive approach aims to foster mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

David Lammy echoed the importance of strengthening dialogue and cooperation, emphasizing a respectful and coherent approach that aligns with the long-term interests of both China and the UK. He dismissed the notion of an \"iron curtain\" between the two nations and expressed enthusiasm for enhancing high-level exchanges and dialogue at all levels.

Both diplomats also discussed key international and regional issues, including the Ukraine crisis, the Palestine-Israel conflict, and the situation in Myanmar, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts to address these challenges.
