The recent expansion of BRICS is a significant milestone in the ongoing rise of the Global South, highlighting the growing demand for a more equitable international political and economic order. Wang Yiwei, director of the Institute of International Affairs at Renmin University of China, emphasized that despite the rapid economic growth of Global South countries, their international influence remains disproportionately low.
The 2024 BRICS Summit, scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, marks the first meeting of the expanded group since BRICS doubled in size at the beginning of the year. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Iran, and Ethiopia have joined the original members—China, Russia, Brazil, India, and South Africa.
With over 40 countries expressing interest or formally applying to join, BRICS is increasingly seen as a cornerstone of a multipolar world, challenging the traditional dominance of Western powers and fostering greater cooperation among emerging economies.
