China and Laos have announced a joint commitment to enhance their mutually beneficial cooperation, as outlined in a statement released on Saturday. This agreement comes during Chinese Premier Li Qiang's official visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic from October 11 to 12, at the invitation of Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.
The statement highlights the continued strengthening of practical cooperation within the framework of China's Belt and Road Initiative and Laos' strategy to transform the landlocked nation into a land-linked hub. Both countries aim to implement a shared cooperation plan for the Belt and Road, emphasizing infrastructure development and connectivity.
A key focus of the cooperation is the China-Laos Railway. Both parties agreed to promote the operation, maintenance, and development of the railway with high quality. They also plan to accelerate the \"juxtaposed border control\" of the China-Laos Railway and work towards the standard gauge connection between the China-Laos Railway and Thailand's railway. This move is expected to advance the China-Laos-Thailand Connectivity Development Corridor, facilitating smoother transportation and trade.
Additionally, China expressed its appreciation for Laos' interest in collaborating on Chinese commercial aircraft and welcomed Laotian aviation enterprises to incorporate these aircraft into their fleets. In terms of trade, China and Laos will further strengthen exchange, aiming to increase both the scale and level of bilateral trade. This includes implementing a zero-tariff arrangement for 100 percent of Lao products exported to China and promoting high-quality Lao agricultural and food exports.
This strengthened partnership between China and Laos under the Belt and Road Initiative is poised to boost economic growth, enhance regional connectivity, and foster deeper bilateral ties between the two nations.
