China’s UN Envoy Upholds Binding UN Resolutions Amid Gaza Crisis

In a compelling address at the UN Security Council briefing on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, reaffirmed the unyielding nature of Security Council resolutions. \"Security Council resolutions are binding for all states, as stipulated in the UN Charter, and there is no room for distortion or interpretation,\" Fu emphasized.

The Gaza conflict, which has been a persistent issue since last October, remains a central focus of the Security Council's efforts. However, Fu highlighted the lack of significant improvement over the past year, noting, \"Instead, the situation has continued to deteriorate.\" He expressed concern over what he described as the marginalization of the council in addressing the escalating humanitarian crisis.

Fu pointed out a broad consensus among council members regarding the Palestine-Israel conflict. He referenced the U.S.-proposed ceasefire initiative from last May, which, despite Israel's apparent acceptance, failed to garner lasting support. \"Over the past five months, the so-called diplomatic efforts seemed to be going in circles, leading to greater civilian casualties and more reckless military adventurism,\" he stated.

Emphasizing the importance of international humanitarian law, Fu warned against the selective application of these principles, cautioning that such double standards could set a dangerous precedent with far-reaching negative consequences. \"Implementation of international humanitarian law is a non-negotiable obligation and cannot be used as a bargaining chip,\" he asserted.

Calling for renewed commitment to diplomacy, Fu urged all parties to prioritize saving lives, exhibit political will, maintain impartiality, abandon political calculations, and leverage all available influence to achieve peace. \"We certainly cannot lose faith in genuine diplomacy,\" he affirmed.

Fu also pledged China's support for the Security Council to utilize all available options to end the war and restore peace as swiftly as possible. His remarks underscore the urgent need for effective and consistent international efforts to resolve the enduring conflict in Gaza.
