China Urges US to Reject Taiwan Independence at UN Assembly

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi engaged in a pivotal discussion with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday during the UN General Assembly in New York. The talks covered critical issues such as Taiwan, the South China Sea, and technological cooperation.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the importance of the one-China principle. He called on the U.S. to publicly oppose \"Taiwan independence\" and support China's efforts towards peaceful reunification. Additionally, Wang voiced strong opposition to what he described as U.S. economic and technological suppression, as well as interference in the South China Sea.

Highlighting the mutual benefits of stable China-U.S. relations, Wang criticized the U.S. for what he termed a \"two-faced\" approach—suppressing China while seeking dialogue. He advocated for a rational understanding of bilateral relations, urging mutual respect, cooperation, and careful handling of differences rather than unilateral actions.

Addressing the issue of Taiwan, Wang warned that moves towards independence could destabilize the Taiwan Strait and undermine regional peace. He reiterated that for the U.S. to genuinely seek stability in the region, it must uphold the one-China principle, cease arms sales to Taiwan, and support peaceful reunification efforts.

Wang also condemned the U.S. for politicizing national security and interfering in China's internal affairs under the guise of human rights. He stressed the significance of cultural exchanges and called on the U.S. to remove barriers to foster better interactions.

Regarding the South China Sea, Wang reaffirmed China's commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue with directly involved parties. He urged the U.S. to refrain from actions that incite tensions and disrupt regional peace.

On the topic of Ukraine, Wang reiterated China's stance on promoting dialogue and peace, urging the U.S. to halt its smear campaigns and sanctions against China, which he claimed exacerbate international divisions.

Both Wang and Blinken acknowledged the candid and substantive nature of their meeting. They agreed on the necessity of pursuing peaceful coexistence, implementing key agreements from their previous meeting in San Francisco, enhancing dialogue, managing differences, and promoting stable bilateral relations while maintaining communication on regional and international issues.
