Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday emphasized the importance of consolidating and developing the unity of the Chinese nation during a significant meeting in Beijing. This gathering, aimed at honoring role models for ethnic unity and progress, was presided over by Premier Li Qiang.
Xi, who also serves as the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, called for enhanced efforts to build a strong community for the Chinese nation. The event recognized 352 groups and 368 individuals for their exemplary contributions to ethnic harmony and unity.
In his address, Xi highlighted the CPC's longstanding commitment to ethnic affairs, noting that over the past century, the party has successfully managed ethnic relations with a distinctively Chinese approach. This approach emphasizes equality, solidarity, mutual assistance, and harmony among all ethnic groups, leading to unprecedented progress in economic and social development within ethnic areas.
Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, fostering a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation has been a central focus of the party's work on ethnic affairs. Xi pointed out that this focus has yielded historic successes, including strengthened cohesion, balanced regional ethnic autonomy, and the elimination of ethnic oppression and discrimination.
Xi also underscored the importance of education in patriotism, collectivism, and socialism, as well as the promotion of the standard Chinese language. He stressed that in the pursuit of modernization and common prosperity, no ethnic group should be left behind. The president called for high-quality development in regions with significant ethnic minority populations, stronger economic ties between regions, and increased interactions among ethnic groups.
Furthermore, Xi emphasized that ethnic affairs must be handled in accordance with the law. He urged party committees and governments at all levels to prioritize ethnic affairs and create a supportive social environment for these initiatives.
