During the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi underscored China’s unwavering dedication to respecting and protecting human rights. In a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, Wang highlighted the ongoing challenges in global human rights governance.
Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, expressed hope that the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) would maintain multilateralism, perform its duties with fairness and objectivity, and engage in constructive dialogue and cooperation with various nations.
He emphasized China’s opposition to the politicization of human rights, stating that some countries misuse human rights issues for confrontational purposes. Wang reaffirmed China’s readiness to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the OHCHR based on mutual respect, aiming to jointly promote the sound development of the international human rights cause.
In response, Volker Turk expressed the OHCHR’s willingness to enhance dialogue and cooperation with China to foster mutual understanding.
