China and Maldives Elevate Bilateral Ties to New Heights

In a significant move to strengthen international relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu in New York on Monday. The discussions centered around elevating the bilateral ties between China and the Maldives to new levels.

Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, highlighted the friendly relationship between China and the Maldives as neighboring nations across the Indian Ocean. He recalled President Muizzu's successful state visit to China in January, during which the two leaders announced the elevation of their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

The leaders emphasized their commitment to building a community with a shared future, with ongoing close exchanges and practical cooperation bringing tangible benefits to the Maldivian people. Wang Yi noted that despite regional and global uncertainties, the China-Maldives relationship has remained steady and healthy, built on mutual understanding, trust, and support.

Expressing China's willingness to further deepen ties, Wang Yi assured President Muizzu that China would support the Maldives in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national dignity. He also highlighted China's readiness to assist the Maldives in finding a development path suited to the country's unique circumstances, particularly through the Global Development Initiative.

Wang Yi emphasized China's support for small island nations in addressing challenges such as climate change, underscoring the commitment to collaborate on sustainable development efforts. He concluded by reiterating China's dedication to maintaining and advancing its traditional friendship with the Maldives, aiming to work together towards mutual benefits and shared global progress.
