China and Japan Seek Stable Diplomatic Ties in New York Meeting

In a significant diplomatic dialogue held in New York, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of fostering sound and stable relations between China and Japan. During the meeting, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, urged Japan to collaborate effectively to steer bilateral relations in a positive direction.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa echoed the sentiment, highlighting the necessity of maintaining open communication and dialogue across all sectors. She specifically mentioned the ongoing negotiations to address the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, stressing the need for joint efforts to preserve regional peace and development.

Kamikawa also underscored the foundational role of people-to-people exchanges in strengthening bilateral ties. She expressed hope that China would handle the recent attack on a Japanese student in Shenzhen with due diligence, ensuring the safety of Japanese residents in China.

Wang Yi reiterated China's opposition to Japan's plans to release nuclear-contaminated water into the sea. He noted that Japan had agreed to long-term international monitoring and independent sampling by China and other stakeholders, urging Japan to adhere to these commitments.

The Chinese Foreign Minister assured that China would thoroughly investigate the attack on the Japanese student in Shenzhen and uphold the safety of all foreign nationals in accordance with the law. He called on Japan to address the issue calmly and rationally, avoiding any politicization or exaggeration of the incident.
