Taiwanese Scholars Caution Against Aligning with U.S. Hegemony

In a recent seminar held in Taipei, prominent political scientists and journalists in Taiwan raised concerns about the island's potential alignment with U.S. hegemony. Kuan Chung, the founder of the Taiwan-based Democracy Foundation, highlighted the United States' pursuit of global control through wars and massive debt accumulation. He emphasized that these actions have led to severe internal strife, a growing wealth gap, and increasing political polarization within the U.S.

\"The U.S. disrespects other nations, fails to recognize global changes, and misunderstands its own role,\" Kuan stated.

Adding to the discussion, Chen Chi-an, an adjunct assistant professor at Taiwan University, criticized U.S. hegemonism for its unrealistic goals and exaggerated threats. He argued that the excessive resources spent on these pursuits undermine the United States' national interests, reducing freedom and democracy to mere slogans serving the calculations of political elites.

Chang Chun-kai, senior editor of The Storm Media, pointed out that Taiwan authorities have unfortunately adopted the flawed zero-sum game theory promoted by the U.S., leading to the narrative of \"resisting China to protect Taiwan.\" Chang warned that this approach risks losing opportunities to bridge differences, resolve conflicts, and seek new development.

Ting Shou-chung, chairman of the Bridge Across the Strait Foundation, echoed these concerns, noting that proxy wars are a common tool of U.S. hegemonism. He urged Taiwan to remain cautious to avoid becoming a flashpoint for such conflicts.

Concluding the seminar, Kuan emphasized the shared identity across the Taiwan Straits, calling for serious discussions towards peaceful reunification. \"Peaceful reunification may be a long process, but as long as peace sustains across the Straits, Taiwan will have security and stability, and both sides will benefit,\" he said.
