China and Norway Establish Dialogue on Green Transition

The People's Republic of China and the Kingdom of Norway have officially launched a Dialogue on the Green Transition, marking a significant step towards collaborative efforts in combating climate change and fostering sustainable development.

Commemorating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store of Norway visited China from September 9 to 11, 2024, at the invitation of the Chinese premier Li Qiang. During his visit, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Store, culminating in the agreement to establish this pivotal dialogue.

The newly formed dialogue aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, preserve and restore biodiversity, and create new green industries and jobs. It seeks to build on existing cooperation while introducing new initiatives to accelerate the green transition. Key areas of focus include:

  • Mitigating and adapting to climate change
  • Ensuring a just and equitable transition to renewable energy and low-emission solutions
  • Implementing sustainable, nature-based solutions to store greenhouse gases and restore biodiversity
  • Advancing sustainable ocean management and green shipping
  • Addressing plastic pollution through international instruments
  • Promoting a circular economy and sustainable green value chains

Collaboration under this framework will involve relevant authorities, businesses, and organizations, leveraging mutual interests and available resources. The dialogue encourages regular thematic discussions and aims to strengthen participation in multilateral processes of mutual interest.

To ensure ongoing progress, a biennial meeting coordinated by the two countries' Ministers of Foreign Affairs will be held to summarize advancements and set new targets for the dialogue.
