China and Gambia Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership at FOCAC Summit

In a significant step towards strengthening international relations, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Gambian President Adama Barrow during the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing.

The leaders announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, highlighting the deepening political trust and increasing pragmatic cooperation between the two nations.

President Xi emphasized the positive progress in China-Gambia relations over recent years, noting that mutual support on core interests and major concerns has solidified their friendship. He expressed China's commitment to continuing aid and cooperation projects that have significantly improved the lives of Gambian citizens.

Looking ahead, China plans to send medical teams to the Gambia, support the development of Chinese language education, and encourage more young Gambians to engage in exchanges with China. These initiatives aim to foster economic growth and enhance the quality of life in the Gambia.

President Xi also congratulated the Gambia on successfully hosting the 15th session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit Conference, reaffirming China's readiness to deepen cooperation with both the Gambia and the OIC.

President Barrow expressed his appreciation for the hospitality of the Chinese people and the prosperity of Beijing. He highlighted the importance of China as a partner for national development and reiterated the Gambia's commitment to the one-China policy. Barrow emphasized the desire to enrich the relationship between the two countries through enhanced cooperation in economy, trade, and people-to-people exchanges.

Both leaders underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation and mutual support, paving the way for a robust and sustained partnership between China and the Gambia.
