China and Ghana Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership

In a significant move strengthening international relations, the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced the elevation of China-Ghana ties to a strategic partnership on Thursday. The announcement was made at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing during Akufo-Addo's attendance at the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

President Xi highlighted that Ghana was the second country in sub-Saharan Africa to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, emphasizing the steadfast friendship that has endured over the past 64 years despite the evolving global landscape. He expressed China's commitment to enhancing political mutual trust, expanding cooperation across various sectors, and aligning development strategies to support Ghana's growth.

Ghanaian President Akufo-Addo echoed these sentiments, describing China as Ghana's most reliable friend and partner over the past six decades. He underscored Ghana's commitment to the one-China principle and support for China's positions on key issues, including human rights. Akufo-Addo also highlighted the substantial contributions of Chinese investment and cooperation to Ghana's economic and social development, particularly in areas like electricity, minerals, and new energy.

The strategic partnership aims to deepen collaboration in critical sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, energy, mineral resources, and infrastructure. Both leaders expressed a shared vision of pursuing modernization together and fostering a relationship built on trust and mutual development. Additionally, China pledged support for Ghana's role in the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2024-2026 term, further solidifying their strategic coordination on international and regional matters.

As Ghana continues to facilitate Chinese businesses and investments, this elevated partnership is set to drive significant advancements in both nations, reinforcing their positions on the global stage and paving the way for future collaborations.
