China and Mauritania Forge Strategic Partnership at FOCAC Summit

At the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani announced a significant step in their bilateral relationship.

The leaders declared the elevation of their ties to a strategic partnership, highlighting the deep-rooted friendship and mutual respect between the two nations. President Xi emphasized the solid political trust and fruitful cooperation that have characterized their relationship, stating that China values Mauritania's firm support on issues central to China's core interests.

President Xi also expressed China's commitment to supporting Mauritania's development path tailored to its national conditions. Both leaders underscored their intention to collaborate on building the Belt and Road Initiative, aiming to deepen cooperation across various sectors and set a model for friendly exchanges and mutual gain.

Additionally, Xi acknowledged President Ghazouani's positive role in preparing for the FOCAC Summit in his capacity as the African Union's rotating chairperson. He highlighted China's willingness to work closely with Mauritania to strengthen the China-Africa community of shared future, amplify the Global South's voice in international governance, and uphold global fairness and justice.
