China and Malawi Strengthen Ties with New Strategic Partnership

In a significant move to bolster international cooperation, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera in Beijing this Tuesday during the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

During their meeting, the two leaders announced the elevation of their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, marking a new chapter in China-Malawi relations.

President Xi highlighted the steady and healthy development of ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malawi. He emphasized the solid political mutual trust and the fruitful outcomes of their mutually beneficial cooperation.

\"China stands ready to deepen our friendly cooperation with Malawi from this new starting point to promote common development and benefit our peoples,\" Xi stated.

He further stressed China's support for Malawi in exploring a development path that aligns with its national conditions. Xi expressed China's willingness to share the development opportunities arising from Chinese modernization and assist in Malawi's national development and construction.

The partnership aims to enhance cooperation in key sectors such as agriculture, telecommunications, and infrastructure. President Xi also encouraged Chinese enterprises to invest in Malawi, fostering economic growth and innovation.

In addition to economic collaboration, Xi called for the utilization of the Confucius Institute at the University of Malawi to promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges, strengthening the social bonds between the two nations.

Concluding the meeting, President Xi affirmed China's commitment to strengthening coordination and cooperation with Malawi in international affairs, aiming to safeguard the common interests of developing countries globally.
