During the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping committed to assisting Eritrea's modernization efforts. Xi emphasized China's readiness to deepen cooperation with Eritrea in key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and agriculture.
In his meeting with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, Xi highlighted China's appreciation for Eritrea's pursuit of an independent foreign policy and its commitment to national sovereignty and dignity. He expressed China's willingness to build political trust and advance practical cooperation aimed at achieving shared development goals.
Xi called for the strengthening of bilateral exchanges and the sharing of governance experiences between the two nations. He also underscored the importance of leveraging initiatives like the Belt and Road Cooperation to foster mutual benefit, win-win outcomes, and fairness.
President Afwerki acknowledged the deep historical ties and strong friendship between Eritrea and China. He affirmed Eritrea's adherence to the one-China policy and expressed hope to expand cooperation in areas including energy, infrastructure, and oceanography. Afwerki noted that such collaboration would aid African countries in their development and in resisting colonialism and hegemony.
Throughout the summit, China and Eritrea are set to sign bilateral cooperation documents in sectors like agriculture and media, further solidifying their partnership.
