China and Djibouti Upgrade Ties to Strategic Partnership at FOCAC 2024

In a significant move at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing, the Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh to announce the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Djibouti, highlighting decades of mutually beneficial economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges. President Xi praised President Guelleh for his consistent participation in all FOCAC summits since the forum's inception, underscoring the strong and enduring ties between the two nations.

China expressed its readiness to collaborate with Djibouti by leveraging shared experiences and fostering win-win cooperation. Key projects on the horizon include the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway, the establishment of an international free trade zone, and the development of a regional trade and logistics hub. Additionally, China will support Djibouti in cultivating high-quality talent to further its economic development.

President Guelleh extended his gratitude for China's valuable assistance in Djibouti's economic growth and the improvement of its citizens' livelihoods. He committed to advancing joint projects like the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway and deepening practical cooperation across various sectors.
