China and Comoros Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Comorian President Azali Assoumani in Beijing during the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) on Monday.

The leaders announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, marking a significant milestone in their cooperation.

As next year approaches the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and the Comoros, Xi emphasized that the relationship between the two countries serves as a model of equality, solidarity, and cooperation between nations of different sizes.

China has expressed willingness to engage in poverty reduction efforts with the Comoros and support the island nation's development by leveraging its geographic and maritime resources.

In addition, China committed to helping the Comoros eliminate malaria by 2025 and expand bilateral cooperation in sectors such as economy, trade, investment, infrastructure, marine fisheries, and climate change.

President Assoumani echoed the sentiment, indicating Comoros' readiness to strengthen and elevate relations with China and to set an example of Africa-China cooperation.

He added that Comoros is prepared to enhance communication and coordination with China within multilateral frameworks to promote solidarity among developing countries and facilitate the resolution of regional conflicts through dialogue.
