In a recent development in the South China Sea, a spokesperson from the Chinese Defense Ministry has urged the Philippines to immediately withdraw its ship and personnel from Xianbin Jiao, part of China's Nansha Qundao, and to restore the unoccupied status of the area.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has been anchoring a vessel in the lagoon of Xianbin Jiao for an extended period. Multiple resupply missions by the Philippines were reportedly intercepted by the China Coast Guard (CCG), adhering to Chinese law.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines have expressed concerns, stating that the Chinese maneuvers jeopardize the safety of Filipino crew members and violate international law. Additionally, the United States has asserted that the Mutual Defense Treaty applies to any armed attacks on Philippine forces, vessels, or aircraft within the South China Sea.
Responding to inquiries, Chinese spokesperson Wu Qian emphasized China's undisputed sovereignty over Nansha Qundao and its surrounding waters, including Xianbin Jiao. He highlighted that since April, the PCG vessel 9701 has been illegally anchoring in the lagoon, a move that China claims infringes on its sovereignty and breaches international agreements like the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC).
Wu criticized the Philippine side’s efforts to establish a permanent presence at Xianbin Jiao, likening it to opening a \"Pandora's box\" and noting strong opposition from neighboring countries. He also mentioned that since August 19, PCG ships have repeatedly intruded into adjacent waters, engaging in dangerous maneuvers to challenge CCG vessels.
Despite calls for dialogue and consultations to manage these differences, Wu stated that China's tolerance has its limits. He urged the Philippines to withdraw its ship and personnel promptly, assuring that China will continue to take strong measures to protect its territorial integrity and maritime interests.
Wu also commented on the role of the United States, suggesting that its support for the Philippines emboldens continued provocations, which China views as disruptive to peace and stability in the region.
