The ninth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting concluded on a high note, with leaders from the Chinese mainland, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam issuing a joint communique. This declaration emphasizes deepened practical cooperation, enhanced mutual trust, and the expansion of common interests among the six nations.
Central to the communique is the commitment to bolster efforts against cross-border crimes such as terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, money laundering, and terrorist financing. To address these challenges, the LMC countries agreed to convene a ministerial meeting focused on law enforcement and non-traditional security cooperation in the near future.
Disaster resilience also took center stage, with the nations pledging to strengthen cooperation in earthquake disaster reduction and improve regional infrastructure connectivity. This initiative aims to enhance the disaster prevention and emergency response capabilities of all LMC countries, ensuring preparedness for earthquakes, mudslides, typhoons, floods, and other natural calamities.
Economic growth aligned with sustainability was another key focus. The communique outlines plans to promote green, inclusive, and sustainable economic development, accelerating the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Additionally, the LMC countries will work towards the high-quality implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreement, aiming to enhance regional trade and investment by reducing non-tariff barriers.
Technological advancement is also on the agenda, with a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and information security. The communiqué calls for strengthened scientific and technological cooperation and capacity building in AI, empowering the inclusive and sustainable development of the region.
Tourism and civil aviation were highlighted as vital for fostering people-to-people connections. The LMC countries committed to enhancing cooperation in these sectors, encouraging more social, cultural, and youth activities to strengthen bonds among their populations.
By fostering collaboration across these diverse fields, the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation aims to build a community of shared future, driving peace and prosperity throughout the region.
