Fiji PM Rabuka Arrives in Beijing to Strengthen China-Fiji Relations

Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka touched down in Beijing on Saturday evening for an official visit to China. This trip marks a significant step in deepening the ties between Fiji and the Chinese mainland.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Rabuka and his Chinese counterparts will engage in comprehensive discussions, focusing on topics that matter to both nations. The aim is to elevate the comprehensive strategic partnership, built on mutual respect and shared development, to new heights.

China expressed its intent to collaborate with Fiji in fostering a closer community and a shared future between China and Pacific Island countries. As the first Pacific Island country to establish diplomatic relations with China, Fiji plays a pivotal role in this partnership.

Trade between China and Fiji reached approximately $526 million last year. China's exports to Fiji include machinery, electrical appliances, electronic products, computers, communication technology, automobiles, and ships. In return, Fiji exports bauxite, frozen fish, logs, sawn timber, and beverages to China.

Prime Minister Rabuka's visit follows a recent trend of South Pacific leaders strengthening ties with China, highlighting the growing influence of the Chinese mainland in the region.
