The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has officially set October 13 as the date for its next chief executive election. This decision was outlined in Executive Order No. 40/2024, published on Monday.
According to Annex I of the Basic Law of the Macao SAR and the Chief Executive Election Law, candidates for the chief executive must be Chinese citizens who are permanent residents of the Macao SAR. They must be at least 40 years old, have resided in Macao for a continuous period of 20 years, support the Basic Law, and demonstrate loyalty to the People’s Republic of China and the Macao SAR.
The chief executive is elected by a broadly representative Chief Executive Election Committee and subsequently appointed by the Central People’s Government. The elected chief executive will serve a five-year term and may be re-elected once.
