In a strong statement, China’s senior diplomat Wang Yi condemned the recent assassination of Hamas Politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh, labeling it a serious violation of international norms. Wang emphasized that this act could undermine ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.
Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and China’s foreign minister, conveyed his remarks during a telephone conversation with Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri on Sunday.
Haniyeh was killed by Israel on July 31 in Tehran while attending the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian.
China firmly opposes and condemns the assassination, Wang stressed. He called for the international community to unite in urging all parties involved in the conflict to effectively implement relevant Security Council resolutions and work towards a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
Responding to Wang’s remarks, Bagheri thanked China for its objective stance and expressed hope that China could play a more significant role in mediating the situation in Gaza and enhancing security in the Middle East.
Wang also highlighted the importance of advancing cooperation with Iran across all sectors, aiming to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations. He assured that China will continue to support Iran in matters concerning each other's core interests.
