In a significant move towards fostering global peace, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Eurasian Affairs Li Hui visited South Africa on Friday to discuss the ongoing Ukraine crisis with South African officials.
Li Hui is currently on a diplomatic mission visiting Brazil, South Africa, and Indonesia, marking the fourth round of China’s shuttle diplomacy efforts aimed at de-escalating the Ukraine situation.
During his visit, Li engaged in discussions with Zane Dangor, Director-General of South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, and Adv Nokukhanya Jele, Legal Adviser to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The talks focused on the six common understandings recently issued by China and Brazil, which have garnered support from over 110 countries advocating for a political settlement to the crisis.
Highlighting the international community’s consensus on the importance of cooling down tensions, Li Hui emphasized China’s commitment to enhancing communication and coordination with South Africa. He expressed China’s readiness to build a stronger international consensus based on the six common understandings.
The South African delegation expressed appreciation for China’s proactive shuttle diplomacy and called on the Global South to collaborate more closely. They stressed the need to create favorable conditions for de-escalating the situation and achieving lasting peace.
Moreover, South Africa voiced strong support for the six common understandings and pledged to work alongside China and Brazil to promote these agreements within multilateral frameworks. This collaboration signifies a unified effort among nations to address and resolve the complexities of the Ukraine crisis.
