In a significant move to ease longstanding border tensions, China and India convened the 30th Meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on Border Affairs this Wednesday. The discussions marked a renewed commitment from both nations to hasten negotiations aimed at maintaining peace along their shared borders.
The meeting was co-chaired by Hong Liang, Director-General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, and Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary of the East Asia Division of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. Both representatives emphasized the need to actively implement the important consensus reached during their recent bilateral foreign ministers' meeting.
Key agreements from the talks include a focused approach on specific border issues, consideration of each other's reasonable concerns, and a mutual strive to reach an acceptable solution promptly. The commitment extends to maintaining robust communication through both diplomatic and military channels, strengthening the negotiation framework, and speeding up the resolution process to foster a healthy and stable relationship between China and India.
These discussions follow a productive meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Vientiane, Laos, last week. Both ministers expressed their determination to resolve differences and steer bilateral relations back to a positive and constructive path.
