China and Zambia Strengthen Longstanding Partnership for Future Growth

In a show of enduring friendship, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi lauded the deep-rooted cooperation between China and Zambia during his meeting with Zambian Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe in Beijing.

Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1964, the two nations have cultivated a robust relationship, exemplified by landmark projects like the TAZARA railway. Built in the 1970s with Chinese aid, the railway has been a symbol of Sino-Zambian brotherhood, fostering mutual development and revitalization.

Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the recent upgrades in bilateral relations. In 2023, both countries elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, marking a new chapter in their alliance.

Emphasizing Zambia's commitment to the one-China principle, Wang expressed China's readiness to deepen mutual trust and expand practical cooperation. He underscored the importance of activating the TAZARA Railway, aiming to transform Zambia's resource advantages into sustainable development and enhance its industrial capabilities.

Looking ahead, Wang Yi noted that China's modernization efforts present new opportunities for developing nations like Zambia. China is eager to share governance experiences and support Zambia in charting a development path tailored to its unique circumstances.

The leaders also discussed upcoming events, including the next summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing this September. Wang Yi affirmed China's dedication to strengthening traditional friendships and building a China-Africa community with a shared future.

Zambian Foreign Minister Haimbe echoed these sentiments, describing China and Zambia as good brothers and partners. He reiterated Zambia's dedication to the one-China principle and its support for China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Haimbe also expressed Zambia's commitment to activating the TAZARA Railway and leveraging it to accelerate development.

Both nations are set to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, using this milestone to further their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. With increasing Chinese investments in Zambia's agriculture, energy, and mining sectors, the future looks promising for Sino-Zambian collaboration.

The two sides concluded their discussions by agreeing to enhance communication and coordination on international and regional matters, paving the way for continued partnership and mutual growth.
