China and Zambia Strengthen Decades-Long Friendship with New Strategic Partnership

In a significant meeting held in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Zambian Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe reaffirmed the enduring bond between their nations. Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1964, China and Zambia have built a robust partnership, highlighted by landmark projects like the TAZARA Railway, which has been a symbol of Sino-Zambian cooperation since the 1970s.

This year marks a new chapter in their relationship as the two countries elevated their bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership in 2023. This upgrade paves the way for deeper collaboration and mutual growth, setting both nations on a promising new journey together.

During their meeting, Minister Wang emphasized the importance of revitalizing the TAZARA Railway, encouraging joint efforts to harness Zambia's rich resources and enhance its industrial capabilities. He highlighted China's modernization drive as a source of new opportunities for developing countries like Zambia, offering support in governance, development paths, and modernization processes tailored to Zambia's unique needs.

Looking ahead, the upcoming summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in September presents an opportunity to further strengthen ties. Wang expressed China's commitment to working with African nations to build a community with a shared future, elevating the traditional friendship between China and Africa to new heights.

Zambian Foreign Minister Haimbe echoed these sentiments, affirming Zambia's dedication to the One-China principle and its support for China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He recognized the invaluable contributions of Chinese professionals in constructing the TAZARA Railway and expressed Zambia's eagerness to activate the railway to accelerate development and foster friendship.

\"Zambia cherishes its traditional friendship with China and is committed to deepening our comprehensive strategic cooperation,\" Haimbe stated. He welcomed increased Chinese investment in Zambia, particularly in agriculture, energy, and mining sectors, and expressed Zambia's readiness to enhance communication and coordination on international and regional matters.

The reinforced partnership between China and Zambia exemplifies a model of international cooperation, promising mutual development and sustained growth for both nations.
