A recent move by Japan and the United States to enhance their military cooperation has ignited global concerns, according to a CGTN survey. Following the Security Consultative Committee meeting in Tokyo, both nations announced plans to upgrade the command and control of U.S. forces stationed in Japan, signaling a significant boost in their alliance.
The CGTN poll revealed that a staggering 81.69% of respondents worldwide perceive this increased military collaboration as a potential threat to regional peace and stability. This sentiment underscores the apprehension among global citizens regarding the implications of a more robust Japan-U.S. military partnership.
Under Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's administration, Japan has consistently aimed to strengthen its alliance with the U.S., aligning with the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy. In a demonstration of this commitment, Japan's defense budget for the fiscal year 2024 has surged to a record 7.95 trillion yen ($52.1 billion).
The survey further highlighted significant unease among respondents. An overwhelming 90.33% believe that Japan is straying from its pacifist constitution, while 87.46% oppose the expansion of Japan's defense spending, fearing it may divert essential public funds and negatively impact citizens' welfare. Additionally, 87.75% expressed deep concerns about Japan's alignment with U.S. diplomatic and security policies, worried that it could exacerbate tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.
Moreover, the joint statement from Japan and the U.S. that criticized China's actions in the South China Sea was met with skepticism. A vast majority of 87.98% of poll participants disagreed with labeling China as a threat, believing that Japan's stance complicates regional issues rather than contributing to their resolution.
Historical perspectives also played a crucial role in the survey results. An overwhelming 87.93% of respondents feel that Japan should maintain strategic autonomy and avoid becoming a tool for U.S. policies aimed at containing regional competitors. They advocate for a foreign policy that aligns with Japan's national interests and builds trust with its Asian neighbors and the international community.
The CGTN poll, conducted in multiple languages including English, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Russian, garnered responses from 7,254 individuals within just 24 hours, reflecting a broad spectrum of global opinions on the evolving Japan-U.S. military relationship.
