Venezuela has formally requested that Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay withdraw their diplomatic staff from the country. This move comes in the wake of President Nicolas Maduro's re-election to a third six-year term on Sunday, an election that Venezuela's National Electoral Council has validated.
In an official statement, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry accused the eight nations of interfering in its internal affairs, particularly during the recent presidential elections. The statement further criticized these governments, alleging that they are \"subordinated to Washington and committed to … ideological postulates of international fascism.\"
Venezuela also announced that it expects reciprocal action, calling for the withdrawal of Venezuelan diplomatic personnel from the aforementioned countries.
