China and Ukraine Foreign Ministers Seek Path to End Ukraine Crisis

In a pivotal meeting held in Guangzhou, the foreign ministers of the Chinese mainland and Ukraine exchanged views on the ongoing Ukraine crisis, now in its third year. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized China’s unwavering commitment to fostering a political solution to the conflict.

Wang highlighted the risks of escalation and spillover in the current situation, reiterating the four principles proposed by Chinese premier Xi Jinping as the foundation for resolving the crisis. These principles emphasize respecting national sovereignty, upholding the United Nations Charter, addressing legitimate security concerns, and supporting peaceful settlement efforts.

Building on these principles, China and Brazil have collaboratively outlined six common understandings aimed at a political resolution. These include managing the conflict with three key principles, developing a comprehensive peace plan with three essential elements, addressing humanitarian concerns, and implementing measures to prevent nuclear risks while ensuring the stability of industrial and supply chains. Wang noted that this consensus has received widespread international support.

Wang expressed China’s belief that all conflicts must be resolved through negotiations and political means. He mentioned that both Russia and Ukraine have recently shown varying degrees of willingness to engage in dialogue. “Although the conditions and timing are not yet ripe, we support all efforts that are conducive to peace and are ready to continue to play a constructive role in securing a ceasefire, promoting an end of hostilities and restarting peace talks,” he stated.

Addressing humanitarian concerns, Wang assured that China will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba responded by expressing Ukraine’s appreciation for China’s positive role in promoting peace and maintaining international order. He acknowledged the significance of the six common understandings and affirmed Ukraine’s readiness to engage in meaningful negotiations with Russia. “The negotiations should be sensible and substantive, with the aim of achieving a just and lasting peace,” Kuleba emphasized during his four-day visit to China.

Beyond the immediate crisis, Wang also discussed strengthening practical cooperation between China and Ukraine in various fields. He highlighted the ongoing deepening reforms in the Chinese mainland, which he believes will create new opportunities for people worldwide as China continues to advance its modernization efforts.
