China and Japan are set to enhance their cooperative relationship, with China's top diplomat Wang Yi emphasizing the importance of mutual understanding and collaboration. During his meeting with Hiroshi Moriyama, chairman of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party General Council in Beijing, Wang reaffirmed that the two nations view each other as cooperative partners rather than threats.
Wang highlighted the significance of supporting, understanding, and assisting each other as neighboring countries to foster peaceful coexistence. He stressed the adherence to the four political documents between China and Japan, advocating for strengthened dialogue, increased mutual understanding, and deeper cooperation. This approach, he noted, not only benefits the people of both countries but also contributes to regional and global peace and development.
In light of the recent third plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, Wang indicated that China is committed to further deepening reforms and expanding opportunities for Japan's development and bilateral cooperation.
Addressing environmental concerns, Wang discussed China's position on the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. He underscored the need for a long-term international monitoring mechanism to safeguard human health and the marine environment, emphasizing China's role in this initiative.
On the Taiwan question, Wang clarified that it is foundational to bilateral relations. He urged Japan to act cautiously and uphold the spirit of bilateral agreements to maintain the stability of China-Japan relations.
Wang dismissed the notion of China being an \"unprecedented strategic challenge,\" advocating instead for dialogue, understanding, and collaboration between the two Asian nations. He also welcomed Japanese politicians, particularly younger lawmakers, to visit China more frequently.
In response, Moriyama expressed condolences for recent flood disasters in Hunan and other regions of China. He conveyed a commitment to continuing the friendly traditions of past generations, strengthening exchanges, and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation to advance the strategic relationship between China and Japan.
