Sudan and Iran Exchange Ambassadors in Diplomatic Thaw

In a significant step towards mending ties, Sudan and Iran have initiated a diplomatic thaw by exchanging ambassadors this Sunday in Port Sudan. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council, officially received Hassan Shah Hosseini, Iran's new ambassador.

The Sudanese council highlighted the ceremony as \"the beginning of a new phase in bilateral relations\" between the two nations. This move marks a pivotal moment in restoring cooperation that was halted in 2016 when Sudan severed diplomatic ties with Iran in solidarity with Saudi Arabia following the attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran.

Hussein al-Amin, Sudan's Foreign Ministry Undersecretary, underscored the ambassadorial exchange as a \"key component\" in advancing bilateral cooperation. Echoing this sentiment, the Iranian envoy committed to strengthening relations, emphasizing mutual intent to enhance ties.

On the same day, Sudan's new ambassador to Iran, Abdulaziz Hassan Saleh, departed for Tehran and is expected to take up his duties shortly. This exchange follows the October 2023 agreement to restore diplomatic relations, signaling a renewed commitment to collaboration and partnership between Sudan and Iran.
