China and Philippines Reach Temporary Deal Over Ren’ai Jiao

In a significant development in the South China Sea, China and the Philippines have reached a provisional arrangement regarding the management of the Ren'ai Jiao (Second Thomas) reef. A spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that the agreement focuses on humanitarian resupply and the deescalation of tensions in the disputed waters.

China reasserted its sovereignty over Ren'ai Jiao, part of the Nansha Qundao, emphasizing that the Philippines' long-term presence there has violated China's rights and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). The declaration advises against inhabiting uninhabited islands and reefs, a point China highlighted in its discussions.

The provisional arrangement includes three key principles:

  1. China demands the removal of the Philippine warship from Ren'ai Jiao to restore the reef to its uninhabited state.
  2. In the interim, China is willing to allow the Philippines to send essential supplies to personnel on the warship, provided that prior notification and on-site verification are conducted. China will oversee the resupply process to ensure transparency.
  3. Any attempt by the Philippines to build fixed facilities or establish a permanent presence using construction materials will be firmly opposed by China, which pledges to uphold its sovereignty and the DOC.

Recent consultations between the two nations have culminated in this temporary agreement, signaling a mutual effort to manage maritime differences and reduce tensions in the contested region.
