China Urges Stronger UN-SCO Collaboration for Global Peace

China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, emphasized the crucial role of enhanced cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in fostering global peace and security during a recent Security Council debate.

Fu highlighted the SCO's significant contributions to tackling global challenges, advocating for a multipolar world and inclusive economic globalization. He stressed the importance of the upcoming Summit of the Future as a key moment to advance equity and fairness in global governance.

\"We must practice true multilateralism under the guidance of the UN Charter,\" Fu stated, urging for strengthened dialogue and collaboration between the UN and the SCO to bolster international peace efforts.

He praised the SCO's commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and its rejection of Cold War mentalities and bloc confrontations, noting the organization's dedication to the Shanghai Spirit—promoting partnership, openness, and inclusiveness.

Addressing regional security, Fu called for united efforts to combat terrorism, separatism, and extremism, labeling them as major threats to global stability. He encouraged the UN to work closely with the SCO in areas such as counter-terrorism, narcotics control, and addressing transnational organized crime, while also emphasizing the need to build security and law enforcement capacities in the region.

Regarding Afghanistan, Fu advocated for cooperation between the SCO and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan to engage with the Afghan interim government, aiming to prevent terrorism and achieve lasting peace and stability in the country.

Fu also acknowledged the SCO's role in regional economic and social development, commending its efforts in trade facilitation, infrastructure, agriculture, poverty reduction, and sustainable development—all aligning with the UN's goals.

He expressed support for the upcoming SCO Year of Sustainable Development in 2025, which aims to enhance regional development initiatives.

Reiterating China's commitment, Fu stated that as a founding member and the rotating president of the SCO, China is dedicated to promoting world peace and development and building a community with a shared future for mankind.
