In a significant move to deepen bilateral ties, Zhao Leji, chairman of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, embarked on an official goodwill visit to Russia from July 9 to 13.
Invited by Russian State Duma Chairman Viacheslav Volodin and Federation Council Chairwoman Valentina Matviyenko, Zhao engaged in a series of high-level meetings aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two nations.
During his stay, Zhao met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg, followed by separate discussions with Matviyenko and Volodin in Moscow. He also took part in the ninth session of the China-Russia Committee for Parliamentary Cooperation, held in Moscow on Wednesday.
Conveying Chinese President Xi Jinping's warm greetings and best wishes to President Putin, Zhao emphasized the robust development of the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership. As both nations mark the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, Zhao highlighted the substantial progress achieved under the strategic guidance of their leaders, bringing tangible benefits to their people.
Reflecting on President Xi and President Putin's recent meeting in Astana, Zhao noted the strategic agreements reached there and expressed the NPC's willingness to collaborate with the Russian Federal Assembly to implement these agreements at the legislative level. This cooperation is aimed at strengthening political mutual trust, deepening practical collaboration, and enhancing the friendship between the two peoples.
President Putin reciprocated Zhao's message, sharing that his recent discussions with President Xi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana were fruitful. Their exchange on bilateral cooperation issues led to significant consensus, reinforcing the strong collaboration between the Russian and Chinese legislative bodies. This synergy supports key bilateral priorities and fosters a favorable environment for economic, cultural, and legal advancements.
Putin underscored that strengthening the work of the Russia-China Committee for Parliamentary Cooperation facilitates the exchange of experience and mutual understanding. It also enhances collaboration at both legislative and sub-national levels and in other domains, further solidifying the bond between the two nations.
