Peng Liyuan Urges Global Unity to Combat HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis

Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping and a goodwill ambassador for the World Health Organization (WHO) for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, emphasized the need for stronger global efforts to curb these diseases during a meeting on Thursday with Winnie Byanyima, the under-secretary-general of the United Nations and executive director of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), and Jerome Salomon, the assistant director-general of the WHO.

Highlighting that eliminating HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis is crucial for safeguarding human health, promoting welfare, and advancing sustainable global development, Peng acknowledged the proactive and fruitful endeavors undertaken by UNAIDS and the WHO in these areas.

She shared insights into China's practices and experience in preventing and treating HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, reiterating her commitment to continue her role as a goodwill ambassador. Peng expressed her dedication to making further contributions to global efforts in combating these diseases.

Byanyima and Salomon praised the Chinese government's and people's positive achievements in fighting tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, as well as advancements in healthcare. They commended Peng for her outstanding contributions since becoming the WHO's goodwill ambassador and expressed their eagerness to strengthen cooperation with China to further global health developments.
