France’s National Rally Falls to Third in National Assembly Elections

The old aphorism that \"a week is a long time in politics\" rings true in France's National Assembly elections. The far-right National Rally (RN) saw their initial strong performance on June 30, leading the vote share and fueling hopes of a first RN prime minister.

However, just seven days later, voter sentiments shifted dramatically. In the second round, the RN was pushed into third place, eliminating their chances of forming the government. This unexpected turn of events opened the door for the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP), which secured the most seats in the lower house of parliament.

Closely trailing the NFP, President Emmanuel Macron's Ensemble alliance also made significant gains, positioning themselves as key players in the new political landscape. The results highlight the volatile nature of French politics and the rapidly changing preferences of the electorate.
