The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is expanding its horizons with Belarus officially joining as the 10th member state during the 24th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State in Astana. This significant addition marks a new chapter of cooperation within the SCO's dynamic family.
Simultaneously, the Trans-Caspian International Transportation Route celebrated its opening ceremony in Kazakhstan on Wednesday. This milestone event saw the debut of Chinese trucks utilizing the new road transport route to reach the Caspian Sea, enhancing connectivity and trade across the region.
Building a World of Universal Security
At the SCO summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of ensuring security amidst global challenges. He highlighted the need to move away from Cold War mentalities and address complex security issues through dialogue and coordinated efforts. President Xi called for a win-win approach to foster lasting peace and universal security, aligning with the SCO's mission.
The summit concluded with the adoption of the Astana Declaration, where member states committed to enhancing counter-terrorism cooperation, combating drug trafficking, and tackling transnational organized crime. Additionally, the SCO members urged UN member states to pursue comprehensive disarmament and strengthen the global nuclear nonproliferation regime.
Mutual Beneficial Cooperation
Highlighting mutual benefits and inclusiveness, President Xi advocated for the stabilization of industrial and supply chains and the stimulation of regional economic growth. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) continues to be a cornerstone of China's economic cooperation within the SCO, promoting common development among member states.
A key project under the BRI is the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, which signifies a major boost to regional connectivity and trade. Signed in June, this railway will provide the shortest land route linking China with Central Asian countries and is poised to extend its reach to West and South Asia in the future. Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev praised the project, stating it will open up vast markets in South Asia and the Middle East, benefiting both China and regional economies.
Covering over 60% of the Eurasian continent and nearly half of the world’s population, the SCO presents a strategic opportunity for enhancing land and sea transport corridors. The organization’s commitment to an open, transparent, and inclusive multilateral trading system aims to foster an open world economy and address global security risks collectively.
