At the opening ceremony of the 2024 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance in Shanghai, Chinese Premier Li Qiang emphasized the urgent need for in-depth discussions and consensus-building among nations to navigate the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).
Premier Li highlighted that recent breakthroughs in AI technologies, the emergence of new business models, and the rapid expansion of applications are driving a new wave of technological revolution and industrial transformation. However, these advancements also present significant challenges in areas such as law, security, employment, and moral ethics.
China has been proactive in embracing the intelligent revolution by vigorously promoting AI innovation and development. Premier Li pointed out that China places great importance on AI security and governance, implementing a series of practical measures to address these concerns.
He noted that China launched the Global AI Governance Initiative and proposed a resolution at the 78th UN General Assembly to enhance international cooperation on AI capacity building, which was unanimously adopted. These efforts demonstrate China's commitment to contributing constructive ideas and solutions to the global development and governance of AI.
Premier Li expressed China's willingness to collaborate with other nations to ensure that AI serves global development and enhances human well-being. He called for deepening innovation cooperation, promoting inclusive development, bridging the digital divide, and strengthening collaborative governance to ensure the benevolence of intelligence.
The conference saw the participation of about 1,000 foreign guests and representatives from international organizations, industries, universities, and research institutes. The Shanghai Declaration on Global AI Governance was issued during the event, outlining the collective approach to responsible AI development.
