China Backs Kazakhstan’s BRICS Membership, Eyes Stronger Ties

In a significant move on the global stage, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced China's support for Kazakhstan's entry into the BRICS consortium during his state visit to Astana.

Speaking at a press conference with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Xi emphasized the friendly and productive nature of their discussions. \"China supports Kazakhstan in joining BRICS, playing the role of a middle power on the international stage and making its due contribution to global governance,\" he stated.

The leaders unveiled ambitious plans to double two-way trade between their nations in the near future, highlighting collaboration in traditional sectors like economy, trade, investment, production capacity, interconnectivity, and energy. But the partnership doesn't stop there. Both countries are set to explore new frontiers in critical minerals, new energy, scientific and technological innovation, aerospace, and the digital economy.

Trade between China and Kazakhstan has already seen impressive growth, reaching $41 billion in 2023, marking a 32% increase year on year. Kazakhstan's key exports to China include crude oil, metals, and agricultural products, while China supplies Kazakhstan with machinery, electronics, and consumer goods.

Beyond economic ties, Xi highlighted the shared journey of modernization between the two nations. \"We are companions on the path to modernization,\" he remarked, underscoring the mutual commitment to development and revitalization.

The collaboration extends to global initiatives, with both countries agreeing to implement China's Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative. They also plan to strengthen coordination within international frameworks like the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Looking ahead, China is set to host the Year of China Tourism in Kazakhstan in 2025 and will open the second Luban Workshop in the country. Additional collaborations in media, think tanks, and cultural exchanges are also on the horizon, promising a deeper and more vibrant partnership.

Kazakh President Tokayev echoed the sentiment, describing Xi's visit as historically significant and a new milestone in Kazakhstan-China relations. He praised the foundation of mutual respect and trust, highlighting that both nations share similar diplomatic perspectives and uphold the principles of peaceful diplomacy.

As both leaders look forward to a \"golden 30 years\" of bilateral relations, the partnership between China and Kazakhstan stands as a beacon of cooperation and shared progress in an increasingly interconnected world.
