CPC Expels Former Defense Ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu

The Communist Party of China (CPC) has officially expelled former Defense Ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu for serious violations of party discipline and the law.

During a recent meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, it was announced that Wei and Li, who previously served as members of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and state councilors, have been stripped of their qualifications as delegates to the 20th CPC National Congress.

Investigations into Wei and Li began on September 21, 2023, and August 31, 2023, respectively. The disciplinary actions revealed that Wei had engaged in improper benefits in personnel arrangements and accepted significant amounts of money and gifts, actions that are suspected to constitute bribery. Similarly, Li was found to have sought improper benefits and accepted substantial bribes, undermining the integrity of the party and the military.

The CPC Central Committee plans to confirm the expulsion of Li from the party in its upcoming plenary session in mid-July. Additionally, both Wei's and Li's cases have been transferred to the military's procuratorial organs for further examination and prosecution.

These disciplinary measures aim to maintain the integrity and trust within the Party Central Committee and the CMC, ensuring the continued development of national defense and the armed forces.
