In a compelling appeal at the United Nations Security Council, China's permanent representative, Fu Cong, called on Israel to \"heed overwhelming international calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and stop its collective punishment\" of the residents.
Fu emphasized that the Gaza conflict, now extending over eight months, has led to unprecedented destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis. \"There is an overwhelming international consensus on the Gaza conflict,\" he stated, highlighting multiple UN resolutions that demand an immediate and lasting ceasefire, the release of all hostages, removal of barriers to humanitarian access, and protection of humanitarian workers.
Reflecting on previous efforts, Fu mentioned the ceasefire initiative announced on May 31 and Security Council Resolution 2735, which urged both Israel and Hamas to accept the proposal. Despite claims by the United States that Israel had agreed to the proposal, Fu expressed disappointment, noting the lack of concrete actions from Israel to implement a lasting ceasefire.
Contrary to these calls, Israel has continued its military operations, targeting refugee camps across Gaza, resulting in significant casualties and jeopardizing the safety of humanitarian organizations. Fu stressed that an immediate ceasefire is crucial and that resuming hostilities would only exacerbate civilian suffering and hinder hostage rescue efforts.
Beyond Gaza, Fu addressed the situation in the West Bank, where Israeli security forces conduct daily operations against Palestinians. He urged Israel to curb its violence against Palestinian civilians and cease actions that undermine the Palestinian National Authority, including the prompt return of withheld tax revenues.
Additionally, China called for an immediate halt to all settlement activities, reiterating that such actions violate international law and UN Security Council Resolution 2334, thereby diminishing the prospects for a two-state solution.
Fu also expressed concerns over tensions in the Red Sea and along the Lebanese-Israeli border, urging all parties to exercise restraint to prevent further escalation.
