China and Nigeria Forge Stronger Ties in First Intergovernmental Committee Session

The People's Republic of China and the Federal Republic of Nigeria marked a significant milestone in their bilateral relations by co-chairing the first plenary session of the China-Nigeria Intergovernmental Committee on June 21, 2024. This meeting underscores over five decades of robust diplomatic ties and sets the stage for future collaboration across various sectors.

During the session, H.E. Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Peopleโ€™s Republic of China, engaged in discussions with H.E. Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Both ministers reviewed the positive outcomes achieved since the establishment of diplomatic relations and outlined a collaborative vision for the future.

One of the key highlights of the session was the reaffirmation of the \"One China\" policy. Nigeria acknowledged that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, opposing any separatist activities related to \"Taiwan independence\" and supporting China's efforts towards national reunification.

The two nations also emphasized their commitment to supporting each other in international forums such as the United Nations, G20, and BRICS. They discussed joint efforts in promoting good governance, democratic values, and enhancing peace and security, particularly in the Sahel region where Nigeria plays a leading role in combating terrorism and transborder crimes.

Economic cooperation was a major focus, with both countries pledging to advance the high-quality Belt and Road Initiative. They agreed to strengthen partnerships in infrastructure, telecommunications, finance, agriculture, and mining. Additionally, there was a strong emphasis on fostering collaboration in emerging sectors like the digital, green, and blue economies.

Cultural exchanges and people-to-people ties were also prioritized. Initiatives such as the Happy Chinese New Year celebrations, Chinese-Nigeria Culture Week, and the Abuja International Art Fair were discussed to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Looking ahead, China and Nigeria are committed to maintaining regular communication and convening subsequent sessions of the intergovernmental committee to ensure the continuous development of their bilateral relations.
