Chinese leader Xi Jinping has called for all-out efforts to combat the recent floods and droughts affecting the country, emphasizing the importance of disaster relief to safeguard lives, property, and social stability.
In his report outlining strategies for flood and drought relief, Xi, who also serves as the general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, highlighted the severe weather challenges facing China. He pointed to the heavy and persistent rainfall in southern regions and the ongoing droughts in the north, urging no effort should be spared in search and rescue operations for those missing or trapped.
Xi stressed the need for proper arrangements for disaster victims, maintaining normalcy in work and daily life, and minimizing overall damage. As China enters its main flood season, he called on all localities and departments to enhance disaster monitoring and early warning systems, prepare adequate equipment and materials, and ensure effective responses to emergencies.
Several provinces have already initiated or upgraded their emergency responses to flooding following intense downpours and rising river levels in June. Concurrently, central and northern China are experiencing scorching heat, with many national weather stations recording record-breaking daily high temperatures.
